PHUNTSOK CHOELING is a Sakya Buddhist Centre, the only Buddhist Sakya Centre in New Zealand guided by the Spiritual Direction of Lama Choedak Rinpcohe. Lama Choedak resides in Australia and has founded many schools throughout Australasia. The Sakya school is one of four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism, the others being the Nyingma,Kagyu, andGelug. The Centre was founded after a group of local people regularly gathered together to share their interest in Buddhism and was followed on with the blessings and naming of Chogye Trinchen Rinpoche, (Spiritual father, mentor and teacher of Lama Choedak) when he made a rare visit to Hawkes Bay in 2001.
